Ica
viñas de sal
Our Argentinian sommelier friend Claudia Erazo invited us to explore Ica at the south of Lima province, we’re all Peruvian wine comes from. We had the pleasure of staying at historic wineries, Ocucaje and Tacoma, and were treated to overnight at their hotels. Thanks Paco, for the invitation! We had an amazing time.

Pepe Moquillaza is a living legend in the world of Peruvian alcoholic beverages. Or better, a narrator of living stories, which is how he considers himself. And he does it not only from the mouth out, through his comments and opinions regarding Pisco and wine, mainly, but also through the drinks he produces; that is, from the mouth in.

But Pepe is also a great friend with whom we have shared many adventures for a long time. That’s why, whenever we can, we sit down to listen to his exploits… with a glass in hand, as it should be.

Certainly, Pepe is not a novice in this novel of growing audience that is wine production. In fact, he is part of the stellar cast of the pisquera production that climbed to the big screen of the Peruvian Gastronomic Boom with his pisco Inquebrantable – difficult to coin a better name for a pisco – and his role as director of the Pisco Regulatory Council between 2006 and 2008.

Today, however, his dedication is mainly oriented to natural wine, or without intervention, as he prefers to call it, a market that five years ago looked like a chimera, but today is one of the most dynamic; mainly fed by an audience that seeks authenticity and environmentally friendly practices; but above all, good stories.
The truth is that those who know Pepe know that he is a person who always preferred difficult, if not impossible, battles. A true Don Quixote – with the appearance of a good-natured Sancho – who understands that much of the struggle to get a market, that is, winning customers, is fought in the arena of ideas, fantasy and fiction.
